I never knew I needed a bucket coat until I saw one. In this post, I share my pattern review of the Sculptural Bucket Coat sewing pattern designed by Tree of StitchlessTV – a sewing YouTuber. I have had the pleasure of meeting Tree in person at Frocktails and she is a creative talented artist. The bucket coat one of her signature designs. It is a unique addition to my handmade wardrobe.

I had the PDF sewing pattern – it is available in paper format as well. The downloaded pattern comes together easily and quickly. That is because the front and back pattern piece are similar apart from the neckline. The facing is traced off from the back/front pattern piece.

So you have to tape together the one piece and make adjustments on the single layer. Great design makes a consideration for saving paper, printer ink, tape, glue and time. These all the banes of PDF patterns!

Another great feature of this sewing pattern is how Tree put the instructions on the pattern pieces themselves. This defies conventional sewing pattern standards where you have to look at a separate booklet for the instructions. No more misplacing the instructions and having to look them up on the phone or reprint them. Quite ingenious really!

You have the option of deciding for yourself how high you want the “bucket” point on the coat. The point can be sewn closer to the armscye for a shallower drape or further down for a deeper drape. I located mine at the midpoint where the “bucket” was in line with the widest part of my body – my hips.

I had played around by pinning the point at varying locations and I liked the shape to be at the hips. My fabric is a stable woven which holds the drape well and that gives it a modernist architectural feel.

You can really go to town with a tailored look if you wanted with this pattern. The other day I was looking at a Vivian Westwood window and realised that the Bucket coat pattern could be adapted to look like a Westwood with the right fabric. Wouldnt that be something?

Sculptural Bucket Coat Review

Pattern Description: The Sculptural Bucket Coat is a multisized pattern. The pattern is in the style of Japanese sewing with an exaggerated side silhouette. It features raglan sleeves and a stand collar.

Pattern Sizing: It comes in S/M/L/XL. I cut the size S. The fit is as I had expected based on the pattern pictures.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? – Yes. Very easy. STitchlessTV has a video sew-along on her YouTube channel you can follow.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – I saw this bucket coat on Tree (STitchlessTV) when I met her at Frocktails and fell for the triangular sides that can be more structured in a heavier fabric or drapey soft scoops in a lighter weight fabric.

Fabric Used: Lady McElroy Cotton Sateen Animal Print. Woven. Composition – 97% Cotton, 3% Spandex. 56″ wide.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I did add rows of topstitching on the front and along the collar. I also added a popping bee trim along the sleeve seam and the center back inspired by one of Tree’s versions. I bought the trim on Etsy.

Would you sew it again? – Yes! I want to make another in a wool check fabric. You can see many versions of this coat on Tree’s sewing channel for inspiration.

Would you recommend it to others?– Yes. It is deceptively quick to sew up once you get going.

Conclusion – As you can see from the pictures I do feel very feisty when I am searing this bucket coat. I get loads of compliments when I don it for an evening with friends or family. Someone even complimented me on it while I was shopping and I responded that I had sewn it myself. She refused to believe it!
