An interesting development has happened in the sewing world which could change the world of sewing. Patrones have designed a new way to own the magazine digitally. You can download their Patrones app and with it, you can preview, buy single issues, or purchase an annual subscription. When you install the app you have the option of getting the free issue so you can try it out for size.

Patrones (or Couture Actuelle in France) is a well regarded sewing magazine that produces sewing patterns in varying sizes. Their main size range is 40-48 which does mean that you have to be able to do grading to use all of their patterns.

The app is easy to use and navigate. I show how I used it on my Android device in this video below.

Free Patrones Magazine

The benefits of this new service are multifold. One of the things that concerns most sewing magazine collectors is the storage issue. If the magazines are digital and easy to browse – it eliminates that hurdle. You also get the benefit of downloading one pattern at a time. No more having to trace over a myriad of lines. Most of the patterns are around 9 pages with the exception of coats and maxi dresses.

This is an exciting development that will have drive many changes in the way that sewing patterns are produced and used. I am curious to see how Burda will react to this new development. In the past, Burda have been the vanguard in terms of developing new ways to sell their product – they were doing PDFs before people trusted PDFs.

I predict that Burda will follow suit and its only a matter of time before some of the print publications will reduce their output in favour of this app format. This reflects what is also happening in traditional print news media.
