Welcome to today’s post which is a Grasser No. 217 sewing pattern review. Grasser No. 217 is a free sewing pattern from the Russian pattern company. I have sewn with Grasser many times before and I am a big fan of their fashion-forward style as well as their use of industrial seam allowances. This particular dress is a favourite as this is the third version I have made so far. Why have I made 3 of them? – well it’s because they require just under 1meter of fabric. SInce they use industrial seam allowances you can squeeze this out of even 1 meter of Liberty Tana lawn which a narrower width comparatively. For further details of how to start with Grasser sewing pattern please check out the linked post. At the bottom of this post, you will find links to other Grasser sewing projects post as well.

Pattern Description

Sundress with straps featuring a tapered A-shaped silhouette, above the knee length. On the front detail, there are chest darts, a V-neckline. The upper edge of the product is faced. There are vents in the side seams.

Pattern Sizing

Pattern sizes – from 38 to 54. The pattern in each size is presented in four ranges of heights – 158-164cm, 164-170cm, 170-176cm, 176-182cm. You have to choose the right size and height carefully.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes they were. The instructions are in Russian but a quick Google translate is adequate to signpost. Since this is a simple dress anyway, they work. Here is a video I made about sewing with Grasser patterns –

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I like the ease of wearing it, especially on hot summer days. It travels well for camping trips too. The simplicity of the style allows the fabric to shine.

Fabric Used

I used a Liberty London Cotton Tana Lawn Wiltshire. Wiltshire is a leaf and berry pattern originally designed for Liberty Fabrics in 1933 by the designer with the initials DS. It was redesigned in 1968, and has been part of the Classics collection since 1979. It comes in many colourways that all have a crisp small print but colours to suit all tastes. I like the brightness of the reds with the blues. Tana lawn is a pleasure to sew with and is easy care, in the sense that it fits into my laundry routine without the need for adjustments.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made

I skipped the vents and just sewed up the side seams in full.

Would you sew it again? Yes, this is my 3rd one.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes!

Conclusion

A great little pattern that is a workhorse in my summer wardrobe. I reach for this so much and love how easy it is to wear. I can dress it up with a slim belt, nude heels, lippy, and tousled hair. I think it’s good to have a 1-meter dress in your sewing repertoire as it means you can get an instant sewing gratification buzz!
