Today’s post is a Marfy 3531 sewing pattern review. I sewed this dress in time for summer as I wanted a cute style dress for special events. I knew that I wanted a romantic floral look so when I saw the scuba fabric, I was a goner. The pattern is from Italian pattern boutique Marfy. They are an established pattern-making company and they sell pre-cut sewing patterns. That means you only get one pattern size. I have sewn with them when I made Marfy 3789. I go into more detail about the patterns in that post. Marfy 3531, however, is the first time I have used their PDF downloadable pattern. They are slowly digitising their extensive pattern range by making them available as PDFS. The benefit of the PDF is that you do get the full-size range and have the opportunity to easily grade between sizes. I don’t mind so much not having instructions as it does give me the flexibility to decide how I’ll put it all together.

Pattern Sizing

Available in sizes 42, 44, 46, 48, 50. I sewed the size 42.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Marfy comes with no instructions per se. Some of the key joining points are marked on the pattern pieces. It is not for the feint of heart. For Marfy 3531, I knew that I had to either fully line the bodice or create facings to finish the armholes and neckline. I opted for using a stretch mesh lining to fully line it as that suited the scuba fabric I was using.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I really like the pretty fit and flare style of this dress. Plus there is the fact that it comes with so many variations which makes it a good bargain.

Fabric Used

I used a Scuba Stretch Knit Fabric with a bold floral print. It has enough body to hold the half-circle skirt. I loved the big bold floral on a black background. It comes in 4 colourways (beige, black, gold, navy) but this navy one appealed to my colour sensibilities more. It is a medium-weight scuba fabric that will also work for woven fabric pattern styles. It is stable and holds a flare beautifully. I fully lined the bodice using a stretch mesh fabric that I’d had in my stash for 5 years from when I wanted to sew a swimming costume. I’m happy to finally use it up!

Would you sew it again? Yes

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, though Marfy sewing patterns comw without sewing instructions, if you have a good grasp of the order of construction you could sew this up. The drafting on Marfy patterns in top rate and worth taking the time to use them.

Conclusion

A lovely little dress that I absolutely love wearing when I want to feel pretty! I have taken to calling it my Ascot dress!
