Today’s post is a review of Tailor Academy – an online sewing masterclass for all levels taught by Stefan Wimmer, a ninth-generation tailor. Being a committed lifelong learner means I am always on the lookout for new things to learn as well as deepening my skills, knowledge, and competency. This tends to loosely tie in with my resolutions at the start of the year. This year I wanted to focus on increasing the quality of my garments without doing the slow sewing thing. I know myself enough to know that my activation energy for a sewing project lasts a couple of weeks at most before I lose interest.

It felt like fate that Tailor Academy reached out at the time that I was looking for a structured approach to improving my sewing skill. The course includes a total of 52 practice-oriented, expert-led video tutorials complete with step-by-step detailed instructions. Each of the 52 modules comes with a downloadable sewing pattern that you work through. The patterns are classic design lines that would make wardrobe staples. You can have a watch of the video review where I share some of what I saw on the first 3 modules.

I like that Tailor Academy is well structured to add to the learning goals by releasing a new pattern module every 2 weeks. This helps me to stick to my plans without the overwhelm of analysis paralysis that can hinder my creative mind. I felt a renewed motivation to take my sewing to the next level as I went through the first 3 classes. The top tips shared by Stefan have been useful in the sewing projects that I was working on at the time.

Within the platform, there are many resources available such as “Setting Up Your Sewing Studio” and “Tension Explained”. The latter was incredibly enlightening and I finally ‘got’ sewing machine tension. The layout on the platform is easy to use and I found it intuitive plus I appreciate the fact that I can watch at a faster speed or I can slow it down to see detail. I was excited to learn new ways of doing things which feeds my sewing passion. Stefan is an excellent teacher and I cannot recommend Tailor Academy highly enough. His professional skills, industry knowledge, and techniques are shared in an easy to understand way that makes the classes actionable not just for the included sewing patterns but for all your sewing.
