Pattern Description – Burda 7/2016 #111 features a slim bodice with a square neckline. It offers a flattering fit with a fitted waist and pleated skirt. With its timeless design and attention to detail, this pattern presents a canvas for creative expression and individualization. Inspired by the New Look, this dress has a long zipper at the back.

Pattern Sizing – EUR36 -44. Based on my bust measurement, I sewed EUR38, which is my usual Burda size.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? – Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? – One of the exciting aspects of sewing with Burda 7/2016 #111 sewing pattern is the opportunity to explore various sewing techniques and processes. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sewist, this pattern offers an excellent opportunity to hone your skills and expand your sewing repertoire. The bodice is fully lined which gives the armholes a lovely clean finish. Mark the pleat lines on the skirt pattern pieces clearly to avoid mistakes. Experiment with different finishes, explore decorative details and make the design your own. Remember, sewing is a creative journey, and this pattern provides an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills and unleash your personal style.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? – I’m quite a fan of the square neckline and I was looking for a summer dress pattern to fit that. The other thing that attracted me was the skirt volume which creates a vintage feel to the dress.

Fabric Used: When it comes to fabric choices, Burda 7/2016 #111 provides flexibility. It is suitable for a range of fabrics, such as cotton lawn, linen, silk, sateen, voile, and batiste allowing sewists to adapt the garment to different seasons, occasions, and personal preferences. The pattern typically requires 2.5m of fabric (add more for directional matching), ensuring you have enough material to bring your vision to life. I used Liberty Tana Cotton Lawn called Birds of Paradise. Birds of Paradise features a menagerie of tropical birds and fruit, drawn together into a humorously cheeky flock. Painted in beautifully detailed gouache, this is a light-hearted and striking conversational. Tana Lawn is a favourite fabric to work with. It is my go-to when it comes to sewing for summer as it can create some lovely comfortable-to-wear garments. The overall colour is pink and quite cool-toned – which is why I love this fabric! For lining the bodice I used Bemberg which I bought from Milan years ago.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I opted for a gathered skirt instead of the pleats. This is because I lost track of the pleats (since I hadn’t marked them as properly as I ought to have! Please learn from me!) so I just decided to sew gathering stitches and adding volume in that way. It worked out well and the added bonus is that I don’t have to iron pleats every time I wash my dress.
