I am so excited to share this video I made reviewing my Burda 2019 sewing year! I have the videos slipt into 2 to make it easier to separate the garments I sewed from the 2019 issues of Burda vs the garments sewn from the other issues of Burdastyle magazine. That is to say – the past issues that are in my collection.

Part 2 is all about those older issues of Burda that have been languishing in my collection.
Burda Germany vs Burda English
I subscribe to the German issue of the magazine. I prefer it because it has a better shelf appeal. That is to say the binding on the German issue makes it easier to see the issue when they are standing on a shelf.
Burda – English vs German Instructions
It was easy for me to switch over to the German issue because, despite the language, I always found that the Burda instructions were..lack luster. I ended up figuring things out myself so using the German issue meant no additional confusion.
Is Google translate any good?
Having said that, I have been picking up Germa sewing terms and can reasonably understand some things. I have to thank the Google translate app where you can scan with your phone camera. I have been using that for over 18 months and can see how far the technology has come – its so much better now and I expect that in another couple of years it will be seamless.

The Best Burda 2019 Issue – September 2019
Here is an issue I thoroughly loved. I’d sew almost everything in this issue. It has a great capsule collection in it. This will be a classic Burda in years to come.
The Worst Burda 2019 Issue – July 2019
I really struggled to bond with this issue. I felt everything in it was underwhelming. In the end, I forced myself to trace one thing for the sake of justifying the subscription.
The Most Memorable Burda Cover – April 2019 & September 2019
The models on the covers of these mags are so interchangeable that I don’t remember the cover models but the colour of the text. But when I think of these 2 cover I see these faces (which has never happened to me before) .
April 2019 was the first time I have seen a mature woman being used on the cover. Sept 2019 was unusual in that the hair is big curly very much like the 80s.
The Best Artistic Photoshoot – April 2019
One of the things I like about Burda is that they try to be like fashion magazines in how they present their patterns. Sometimes when I dont necessarily have time to sew I like browsing through them as I would a fashion magazine.
I loved the black and white styling they did here – it elevated this issue for me.
The Most Confusing Photoshoot – July 2019
There are so many things I didnt get about this image. Especially the man looking st her but she is power posing gazing into the middle distance. Its become an in joke with my husband now – whenever there is a confusing situation, I will just strike the power pose gazing towards a window and we instantly giggle.
The Best Fabric Selection in an issue – March 2019
I just was gaga over the lush tropical prints and bright colours used in this issue. I found them of course but they are very pricey.
The “You Should Have Known Better Burda!” Award- October 2019
For the mens shirt collar that is a good 3 sizes too big on the model! This should not have got past all the quality control/proof checking that an international magazine goes through!
Burda 2020 Subscription- To continue or not to continue
Its safe to say that I will definitely be continuing with my Burda subscription for 2020. So far I have been happy with the average of 1 Burda project per month that I achieved in 2019. This figure is, of course, combining the 2019 Burdas with the past Burdas.
I do think the joy of sewing with Burda is that you can come back to the older issues and still use the patterns. Since fashion cycles around – eventually, they will be on-trend :-).
